Why practice self-care?

by Rochelle Hunter on August 10, 2022

Self-care has recently been popularized in modern media, but the importance of nourishing your body, mind and soul is far from a fad. In fact, some of these practices date back to ancient Egypt. The risks of not practicing enough self-care include burnout, excessive stress, physical and mental pain, trouble in relationships and more. The concept of self-care is about prioritizing your desires in order to fulfill your needs and cultivate a peaceful, joyous lifestyle. You deserve the finest treatment, so read on for some basic tips to enhance your day to day experience.

Practicing self-care supports your overall well being, and helps you to perform your best. If you are always pouring 100% of your energy into your job, family or other relationships, who will make sure you are taken care of? Of course you want to add value to these relationships, but unless you are truly prioritizing your needs, you will be limited in what you can contribute. An insightful way to realize whether or not you can use improvement in this area of your life would be to ask yourself if you would be ok treating a child how you are treating yourself. For example, would you give a child their first meal in the afternoon, not take them outdoors for any play time, give them unlimited screen time, and no set bedtime? That is doubtful! If this sounds like a recipe for disaster, it’s because it is. Ask yourself if you could benefit from implementing a routine into your life, such as making sure you eat 3 meals a day, drinking enough water and prioritizing rest and exercise.

Be sure your daily habits are reflective of the kind of person you want to be. You will never regret spending time on reading, learning a new language, doing a face or hair mask or practicing mindfulness. Be mindful of how much time you spend “plugged in” on your phone, watching tv or even gossiping with friends. These behaviors in excess typically retract value from our life instead of adding to it. Spend time exercising both your mind and body.

Read a good book, go to the nail salon or get your hair styled. There are endless ideas on how to implement self-care into your everyday life, and they will look different for everyone. Here is a list of blogs to check out on various topics related to self-care and a long list of potential self-care activities, ranging from making your bed, reading poetry or even booking a night in a fancy hotel to relax and pamper yourself.
